Tonight's Poet Corner: Shamrock, Hemlock, Mistletoe

Shamrock, Hemlock, Mistletoe
by Belinda Roddie

One luck, one death, one kiss before
the snow drift buries your toes deep
into the ice age, downward coil
of frozen scales. The serpent grows
a patch of hemlock, revoking your
right to a shamrock, forcing your four-leaf
clover to shed three leaves, and the mistletoe
breathes before you can lock lips
with destiny.
