Tonight's Poet Corner: Sonnet Solstice #349

The Double Shift by Belinda Roddie The double shift meant over fourteen hours tending to the store while my boss was out drinking with buddies. As I arranged flowers and swept the floor, I let my body slouch into the nearest chair. I was so tired that I could see new colors on the wall. I knew that this would happen when they hired me; they thought I was young enough to call in and overwork without killing me. After my brief reprieve, I then dusted, restocked, and cleaned until my energy was depleted like a deep riverbed sucked dry from drought. Then the first customer of the morning came in, and I loved her.
