When Plans Don't Work
by Belinda Roddie

When plans don't work, and my strategies fail,
I find myself faceplanting on the couch
and groaning loudly at my epic fail
while my wife deals with me being a grouch
and makes me dinner - hot ramen with egg
and spinach, salty and delicious. She
tells me I did all that I could, and yet
I feel the chill of inadequacy
and wish that things were different, that things had
gone better that day, and my future stays
unclear and uncertain, although I'm glad
I pushed through and got it out of the way.
Sometimes, when plans don't work the way they should,
you take a breath and focus on the good.
