Tonight's Poet Corner: Sonnet Solstice #422

The Denial
by Belinda Roddie

The denial was strong within my class
as I attempted to promote a new
sense of academic rigor; alas,
they were not accustomed to a slight "slew"
of work. One student demanded why I
would not just let them work on a project,
and I had to remind her that in life,
when you work, that's too little to expect.
And they say I'm the one who must be stressed!
But I see the panic that has been glazed
across my students' eyes. How they project
upon me! Defense mechanisms praised.
Their trauma and self-doubt could mean defeat,
but they still attend school and take a seat.
