Tonight's Poet Corner: January 19th, 2021

January 19th, 2021
by Belinda Roddie

The healing will be slow:

more like a tendon after surgery
than a fading yellow contusion;

like a scar that refuses to fade
for years and still pulsates
to the color of angry memories;

every day, we will rehabilitate,
learn to move again, feel again,
love again without fear;

and sadly, some will either demand
we "shake it off" or deny it entirely
(or worse, exacerbate the wound).

The healing will be slow,
and perhaps we shall never quite
smile or laugh the same way again;

but we will laugh.

And we will smile.

And that is worth at least something.
