They Found The Boy
by Belinda Roddie

They found the boy unconscious in a ditch
that had been dug beside an abandoned
farm. There was blood drying on his face. "Which
of you bastards did it?" howled one of them,
leveling his finger at the growing crowd.
"I know it was one of you! I can see
right damn through you! Just because he was proud
of who he was, you all just had to be
so fucking prejudiced!" The loud sirens
of the ambulance drowned him out. The boy
was carried out in a stretcher. "Not dead,"
one of the paramedics said. "Oh, joy,"
grumbled an old woman. The group dispersed,
the protester left to kneel in the dirt.
