Tonight's Poet Corner: Sonnet Solstice #249

She Was Weeping
by Belinda Roddie

She was weeping beside her girlfriend's grave
when you approached, hands hidden in gloves
and face behind a scarf. You wouldn't say
a word to her - you couldn't. All the loves
in the world could not redeem what she lost,
so you just sat beside her as she cried,
remembering that night and how it cost
her everything after her girlfriend died.
She had laid roses across the black soil,
their petals quivering in the light breeze,
her eyes wet and her damp hair slick as oil
against her scalp, the dirt scraping her knees
as she knelt by the tombstone. You exhaled
and walked away. Your logic had prevailed.
