Tonight's Poet Corner: A Flawed Apocalypse

A Flawed Apocalypse
by Belinda Roddie

The world does not end
with fire, but with online flame wars.
The world does not end
with floods, but with spam emails.
The world does not end
with storms, but a storm from
the White House, where conspiracy
theories are served for breakfast
like eggs and bacon: A classic staple.

The world does not end
with the breaking of seven seals.
Instead, it ends with the breaking
of minds subservient to a cult
not dressed in robes, but in
ill-fitted suits with poorly knotted
neckties. It ends with false prophets
swallowing speed and screaming
gospels without salvation.
It ends not in a rapture, but in
the overturning of tombstones
meant to preserve innocent graves.

And one thing is accurate:
The world will end
with wailing and grinding of teeth.
