Tonight's Poet Corner: Sonnet Solstice #493

Relentlessly
by Belinda Roddie

Relentlessly, I pushed my sore body
against the winds and icy whips of snow
that lashed like serpents' hot tongues against me.
My city was dark, as there had been no
electricity running on the grid
since Tuesday. All I wanted was to get
home to my wife and children. As I slid
around on ice, I made with God a bet
that if He spared me, I'd return to church
at least once (I just couldn't guarantee
a regular recurrence). Each bone hurt
in my body, and through the agony,
I saw shadows ling'ring along my porch.
My wife caught me as I fell near her torch.
