Tonight's Poet Corner: Self-Conscious

Self-Conscious by Belinda Roddie I wrapped myself up in bandages so no one could see the blue veins crawling out from my neck like spiders with their silken tails trailing after them. I want to inject my natural tattoos with ink so the black can spread to my face, but the toxins would cause asphyxiation, so I'm better off looking permanently damaged than winding off permanently dead.

Today's OneWord: Noticed

"I swear, if I hear one more teenage girl squeal, 'Senpai noticed me!' I'm going to throw myself into a trash bin." Mallory giggled, which was meant by one of my groans as I sunk into a chair. "Hey, you're a cute teacher, and you teach the history of Japan. You're bound to get some weeaboos in your class." "I teach freshmen, Mallory! They should not think I'm 'cute!'"

Today's OneWord: Comedy

"I thought this movie was supposed to be a comedy." "It is." "Then why aren't I laughing?" Shelby paused the DVD and looked at me. "You don't think it's funny?" "Fuck, dude, it's awful. It's tasteless and offensive. There are so many derogatory terms and slurs used in here that it makes me want to puke. And the actors...didn't they have anything better to do than waste time flailing like idiots in front of a camera?"

Saturday's Storyteller: "The UNICEF survival kits only had cigarettes."

by Belinda Roddie The UNICEF survival kits only had cigarettes. So we lit one up each and sat around in a circle, letting the smoke sprout in gray blossoms around our heads. Around us, the grass was black with decay, and the water that touched the bank was toxic green. There were six of us in total, and we must have been the last people on this continent. And here we were, with cancer sticks. "Least we can kill ourselves faster," quipped one of the six, sucking on the cylinder like it were candy. His nametag said BORIS. I was sitting on his right. He smelled like roasted garlic. Everything did. The airplane we had been flying over the scene was now a gross, skeletal husk on the horizon. Twisted like a dead contortionist's body, it almost looked human the way it rose up from the crater it had made in the earth. Its wings looked more like broken legs, metal kneecaps reaching toward the sky as a howl appeared to emanate from the corpse. Maybe you could hear it weep...

Today's OneWord: Whom

"I have a letter," said the butler. "To whom is it addressed?" The butler looked at him oddly. "To you, sir," he said. "Whom else would it be addressed to?" His elderly master reached for the beige envelope with trembling fingers. A red wax stamp held the crinkled paper together, but the man had trouble opening it. The butler had to get him his prized brass letter opener.

Tonight's Poet Corner: Introspection

Well. This week, I have been quite discombobulated. Blame it on the return to my work schedule after having a blast in Philadelphia with my sister and her boyfriend. Blame it on the fact that the scores for my PACT have been delayed for over a week now. Blame it on the fact that I had to quickly renew my CPR training, I struggled through some of my lessons. Blame it on the political environment. The actual environment (warm beginning of the week versus rainy end of the week). Heck, maybe just blame it on the fact that disorientation is a thing. Once again, it's setting in just how much I have done and how much I have left to do. I just wish things could get wrapped up simply and topped with a nice metaphorical bow, as it were. For now, it's all about getting back into the rhythm. Hence, another short introspection as I concentrate on sleeping and getting some work done and wedding planning taken care of over the weekend. Have a great night and a great weekend, everyone.

Friday's Ten Word Tales: I'll Take 'Em!

I'll Take 'Em! by Belinda Roddie The genie was drunk. He granted the woman "three bitches."
