"What's the matter? Don't you get the reference?"
"Um...no."
He glowers at me from across the table. "It's a Tolkien reference. Tol-kee-en. Are you trying to tell me you don't know what an ent is?"
"An ant?"
"An ent, you moron. A tree person. There's one named Treebeard."
"Oh." I shrug. "Well, that explains it. I don't read books where the author can't think of actually good names for his characters."
He's certainly not pleased by that remark.
"Um...no."
