Tonight's Poet Corner: Easy Does It

Easy Does It
by Belinda Roddie

Just relax, kiddo, slow it down. Drink
your beer slow enough so that it gets warm
at the bottom - an overeager heat waiting
to worm its way into your stomach and crawl
through the tunnels of your intestines until
it finds a place to sleep.

We're all here, celebrating someone's birthday
or such-and-such's anniversary or who's-it's last
day on Earth. We're blessed, really. Our halos
are suds above our heads. Our bellies are full
of holy yeast. Who needs wafers when
the blood of Christ is bubbling in your schooner?

No one's in a hurry to leave, and you shouldn't
be, either. Take my hand, buddy. Careful when
you dismount the stool. Wherever you go,
the bathroom, the pool table, the patio outside
for a smoke, remember to leave a kiss on each
window you pass, and don't forget to send us
a postcard from the other side.
