Tonight's Poet Corner: Down In The Valley

Down In The Valley
by Belinda Roddie

Down in the valley, we drink red wine,
waiting for the rally to end. With a sigh,
we'll lie on our backs and blow smoke
out our stacks, and we'll reminisce
over a "much better time." That

"much better time" was when weather
was calmer, and eating sweet treats
made us all a bit fonder. We chewed on
fresh fruit and wore comfortable boots
as we trod through the fields with
the rest of the farmers. I'm waxing

nostalgic, but my illusion never shatters.
The Zinfandel's warping my silly gray
matter. I'll wrap my arms around you
twice - then you'll scatter. You're nothing
but leaves - I'm as mad as the Hatter.
