Tonight's Poet Corner: Voices

Image
Voices by Belinda Roddie don't worry about property don't cry for cops who spray tear gas like rabid dogs in heat don't worry about feelings - if you're exhausted, think about how those in the literal line of fire feel don't take a knee - instead, donate and educate be aware of privilege ingrained into you like scratchings on a slate don't worry about your own voice - yours is plenty amplified promote those who are normally silenced by the weathered hands of hate

Saturday's Storyteller: White Privilege

White Privilege by Belinda Roddie My name is Belinda Roddie I am thirty years old and was assigned female at birth. I live in the California bay area, and I openly identify as gay and non-binary. I am married, have a stable income and job, and live in a safe neighborhood. I grew up with both of my parents, my brother and twin sister, pets, accessible transportation, affordable healthcare, and safe schools. When it comes to many of the positive things I have in my life, I can connect back to white privilege. This does not mean I have not faced difficulties. This does not delegitimize my struggles with my sexuality, my gender identity, and my emotional disorders. But it is a fact that white privilege benefits me every day. How? Time to turn to a list I saw on social media that I think sends a strong message. I stand with my black brothers and sisters. I will not be killed. I can go jogging ( #AhmaudArbery ). I can relax in the comfort of my own home ( #Bot...

Tonight's Poet Corner: Introspection

The school year is almost over. Wow. And it's been crazy. There's a lot I want to talk about when it comes to my job and school, but I can't. Definitely hit me up on a video call if you want to both drink and spill tea. I am just super proud of my students for enduring this situation. It is not fun. It is not pleasant. It is far from ideal. And I'm going to get all of them to pass - that's my mission. Being able to perform, sing, and hear my writing come to life has been such a blessing. For the first time, the twinsie and I are collaborating on a full length play together. We are pulling things from older work and transforming it into something really fun and special. Thank you, Jocelyn, for this amazing collaboration. I love you so much. The world is in pain. There is so much cruelty and corruption. It takes every fiber of my being to push forward, every day. Even with all my privilege, I feel so damn tired all the time. But I have to keep moving. I am wor...

Freeform Friday: Deez Raps For Hire

Deez Raps For Hire by Belinda Roddie Feeling like a child, so I got me a fresh snack pack Living out my fun-ass life like it deserves a laugh track Gonna wrap my love up like burritos in a duvet "But I want to be free from the duvet!" Darling, touché May as well sell my soul for a hundred bucks on Craigslist That way, you can harvest it and choke it down for breakfast Perching on my best furniture - Babies, it's a milk crate Let's eat some Kraft Mac 'n Cheese and call it our best bad date Got my bitches lined up like the sneakers on my shoe rack Guess it's not a myth that I get pulled up by my bootstraps Tell me, are you madly in love with an intellectual? Hope that intellectual's also a homosexual Wait for me to warm up, 'cause my body's oh-so-flexible Nothings I'll hum in your ear will all be so subtextual Thanks to Jocelyn, Laine, and Nina for the rhyming words!
